Barco - Networked visualization on-the-go: a cost-effective solution to impressively enhance command and control
Some one-off events like festivals and official ceremonies require exceptional security measures but, quite frequently, control rooms are lacking. Information is then mainly shared via radio and involves a heavy hierarchically layered command structure. The Barco solution? A temporary command center, featuring our networked visualization and collaboration solution.

Images from diverse sources

From video walls and displays through to a networked visualization platform: Barco has all the solutions available to set up mobile control rooms. Hence the pioneering project it set up in 2014, together with INNOS, the new Belgian Innovation Center for Security, to ensure security during an official ceremony in Nieuwpoort. “We installed a temporary command center, where images coming from mobile CCTV camera units and police helicopters, and even feeds from social media, were visualized,” explained Arne Dormaels, researcher at Innos.

Decisions taken 6x faster

The results exceeded expectations: the simple, cost-effective set-up helped improve command and control significantly. “As all the right information was available to the right people at the right time, via common interfaces, communication between people in Nieuwpoort and further away was much easier,” Arne continued. “Besides, Barco’s mobile break-out solution significantly enhanced efficiency. Decisions were based on real-time information and, consequently, were better and taken six times faster!”

A 360° view on the festival grounds

Inspired by the success story in Nieuwpoort, a major music festival called in Barco’s help to set up a similar network-centric control center last summer. Split over three control rooms, the mobile control room combined the images and data coming from diverse sources to then create on-the-fly views, distribute these and visualize them on bright video walls/displays. Here too, the ROI was impressive: the solution boosted efficiency and everyone involved in security had all eyes on what was happening in the festival grounds.
